Compatible with Johnson and Evinrude V4 engines in the 88-140 HP range from 1978 to 1998, specifically the small housing version.

Key Features and Specs:

• Housing Type: Small V4 gearcase – Propeller shaft hub diameter approximately 3-5/8" to 3-3/4" with 13 splines on the propeller shaft. (Note: Some V4 models use a large housing with 4-5/8" to 4-3/4" hub and 15 splines—provide your serial/model to confirm small housing fitment.)
• Drive Shaft: Must purchase separately (see our catalog, page 56, for compatible replacement top drive shaft). Reuse your existing shift rod. For 1978-1991 models: Uses older-style drive shaft. (Note: 1992 and newer OMC lower units feature snap-in top drive shafts, but this listing focuses on small housing compatibility up to 1998.)
• Water Pump: Sold separately (not included). Install your water pump (or purchase one), add gear oil, and the unit is ready for service.
• Warranty: Includes a 1-year manufacturer warranty. An additional one-year extended warranty is available for $350.  There is no core return for this gearcase.

Important Selection Tip: To match the correct gearcase (shaft length, gear ratio—often around 1.83:1 to 2.00:1 for V4 small—rotation, and engine type like crossflow or early looper), please provide the serial number and model number from your motor's transom bracket. This ensures we avoid mismatches between small and large V4 housings.
