What is an outboard powerhead?

The powerhead is the engine itself: the block, crankshaft, rods, and pistons that sit on top of the midsection. Replacing the powerhead instead of the whole motor lets you keep your existing midsection, lower unit, controls, and rigging, often for a fraction of the cost of a new outboard.

Before you order: make sure it fits

  • Serial number and model number. Both are on the tag on your transom bracket. This is the single most important thing for fitment.
  • Horsepower and year. Many powerheads cover a range of horsepower and years, but internal changes happen mid-run.
  • Fuel system. Carbureted, EFI, Optimax/DFI, FICHT, E-TEC, and HPDI powerheads are not interchangeable.
  • What transfers over. Most powerheads ship as a block assembly. Plan on moving over your carbs or fuel injection, flywheel, stator, starter, ignition parts, and other accessories from your old motor. A base gasket kit is included.

Every powerhead includes a 2-year warranty, with an optional 12-month extended warranty available within 30 days of purchase. Many powerheads qualify for a core refund when you send back your old powerhead. Check each product page for the core value.
